INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMES

1. Global Forest Resources Assessment: a programme for maintaining a permanent capability to provide information on the state of forest resources worldwide on a continuing basis.

National focal point: Ministry of Rural Development and Food

2. UN Man and Biosphere Programme: a programme intended to develop the basis, within the natural and the social sciences, for the sustainable use and conservation of biological diversity and for the improvement of the relationship between people and their environment globally.

Activities:

  • 2 biosphere reserves, designated 1981

3. International Cooperative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests: this programme provides a periodic overview on the spatial and temporal variation in forest condition in relation to anthropogenic as well as natural stress factors on a systematic network and a deeper insight into the interactions between the various components of forest ecosystems.

Implemented since 1991

Activities:
  • 101 Level I sample plots
  • 4 Level II sample plots

4. LIFE - III The Financial Instrument for the Environment: a programme towards the implementation of Community policy defined by the Sixth Action Programme for the Environment divided in

  • LIFE-Nature: implementation of Community nature protection legislation
  • LIFE-Environment: contribution to the development of innovative techniques and methods by co-financing demonstration projects
  • LIFE-Third countries: contribution to the establishment of capacities and administrative structures needed in the environmental sector and in the development of environmental policy in third countries bordering on the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea other than central and east European accession candidate countries

Implemented since 1992

Activities:

  • LIFE-Nature: NATURA 2000 network, 45 projects
  • LIFE-Environment: 94 projects

5. Global Terrestrial Observing System: a programme for observation, modelling and analysis of terrestrial ecosystems to support sustainable development and · facilitate access to information on terrestrial ecosystems, so that researchers and policy makers can detect and manage global and regional environmental change.

6. Community Initiative Programme (CIP) INTERREG III B CADSES (Central European, Adriatic, Danubian, South-Eastern European Space): this programme supports transnational co-operation to enhance balanced and sustainable development of the European territory, through promotion of appropriate measures and management of environmentally sensitive areas of high biodiversity like coastal zones, mountainous areas, river basins and wetlands.

Implemented since 2000

Activities:

  • 10 approved projects as Leader Partner
  • 11 submitted project ideas

National focal point: Ministry of Economy and Finance

7. Sixth Environmental Action Programme 2001-2010: the programme identifies four environmental areas to be tackled for improvements: Climate Change; Nature and Biodiversity; Environment and Health and quality of life and Natural Resources and Waste.

8. Sixth Community Framework Programme for Research 2002-2006: a programme that aims at strengthening the scientific and technological bases of industry and encourage its international competitiveness, while promoting research activities in support of other EU policies.
